ProMedica Health & Wellness HQ

Location: Toledo, OH

The ProMedica headquarters in Toledo, OH, artfully revitalized by HKS, demonstrates that adaptive reuse can be socially and environmentally beneficial and interesting and beautiful. The new offices, now home to the not-for-profit healthcare organization, took over the former Toledo Edison Steam Plant originally built in 1896. The facade, designed with insulating glass units (IGUs) to help bring the building’s performance to current codes, leveraged clear glass with low emissivity (low-e) and acid-etched Velour finish to support solar control. The window glass was replaced with IGUs fabricated with low-e glazing to improve energy efficiency. Now, the glass transmits only 34 percent of the total solar energy while allowing 70 percent of visible light to pass through supporting a healthy work environment with ample daylight while minimizing glare and heat gain.
