Light & Solar Control
Laminated architectural glass may be designed to reduce solar energy transmittance, control glare and screen out ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Transmitted solar energy is reduced by the use of tinted or coated glass, colored interlayers, silk-screened glass or combinations of each that absorb or reflect part of the solar radiation in the ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared ranges. The absorbed energy is converted to heat, and a large portion is dissipated to the exterior.

Laminated architectural glass can be fabricated using various glass types, including low-e, clear, low-iron, tinted, reflective, patterned or wired glass to achieve desired aesthetics or to improve solar control and thermal performance. Mass pigmented and decorative interlayers can also be use to provide a wide range of effects.

UV Control [-]
Approximately 2% of the total solar radiation comprises ultraviolet light (wavelengths of 290–380 nm). This UV radiation is one of the causes of degradation of dyes, pigments and polymers, resulting in decomposition of unprotected plastics and fading of carpets, drapes, art and other interior fixtures. Laminated glass is essentially opaque to UV radiation and is stable over time. Greater than 99% of UV radiation with a wavelength of less than 380 nm is absorbed, even with an 0.030″ interlayer.
